Terry Gilliam is a screenwriter, director, animator, actor, and member of the Monty Python comedy troupe. He is well-known for directing many film cult-classics, including Brazil (1985), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). Many of his films have been nominated for Academy and Golden Globe awards, and in 2009 he was given the BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award for his contribution to motion picture arts. The only “Python” not born in Britain, he took British Citizenship in 1968. His latest film The Zero Theorem was released on August 19, 2014, and stars two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, David Thewlis, Matt Damon, and Tilda Swinton. Visit his website.

In Gilliamesque, his “pre-posthumous memoir,” he offers an intimate glimpse into his world in this fascinating book illustrated with hand-drawn sketches, notes, and memorabilia from his personal archive.

From his no-frills childhood in the icy wastes of Minnesota, to some of the hottest water Hollywood had to offer, via the cutting edge of 1960s and ’70s counter-culture in New York, L.A. and London, Terry Gilliam’s life has been as vivid, entertaining and unorthodox as one of his films.

Packed with never-before-seen artwork, photographs and commentary, Gilliamesque blends the visual and the verbal with scabrous wit and fascinating insight.  Gilliam’s memoir also features a cast of amazing supporting characters—George Harrison, Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, Uma Thurman, Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger and all of the fellow Pythons—as well as cameo appearances from some of the heaviest cultural hitters of modern times, from Woody Allen to Frank Zappa, Gloria Steinem to Robert Crumb, Richard Nixon to Hunter S. Thompson. Gilliam’s encounters with the great and the not-so-good are revealing, funny, and hugely entertaining.

It’s an honor to host Terry Gilliam for the launch event of his book and a wonderful follow up to our event last Fall with fellow Pythons John Cleese interviewed by Eric Idle. Watch that video here. The book is an unrestrained look into a unique creative mind and an incomparable portrait of late twentieth-century popular culture.

John Fogerty is one of rock’s most influential musicians and writers. He was songwriter, lead singer, and lead guitarist for Creedence Clearwater Revival and has been named one of the 100 Greatest Singers and one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists by Rolling Stone and his most recent album was named one of Rolling Stone‘s 10 Best Albums of 2013.

Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most important and beloved bands in the history of rock, and John Fogerty wrote, sang, and produced their instantly recognizable classics: “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Born on the Bayou,” and more. In his memoir, he reveals how he brought CCR to number one in the world, eclipsing even the Beatles in 1969. By the next year, though, Creedence was falling apart; their amazing, enduring success exploded and faded in just a few short years.

Fortunate Son covers Fogerty’s Northern California roots, through Creedence’s success and the retreat from music and public life, to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.

Cindy Crawford is one of the original supermodels who defined that pivotal moment when fashion models became cultural stars in their own right. Crawford used her fame and business savvy to launch an entrepreneurial career that has encompassed beauty, fashion, fitness and home décor brands. She has appeared on over a thousand magazine covers worldwide and has been the face of brands as diverse as Revlon, Omega watches, and Pepsi.  Visit her website.

“I want to honor and acknowledge the girl I once was while embracing the woman I am today, and I even look forward to the wise woman I hope I will become in future decades.”—Cindy Crawford

Becoming is a chronicle of Cindy Crawford’s life, in which she shares stories of her professional and personal evolution, accompanied by her most iconic images, as well as never-before-published photographs from her personal archive.

The 1990s era of the supermodel was a cultural phenomenon which made stars out of a select group of strong women who surpassed mere beauty by embodying a new spirit and personality that made them celebrities in their own right.  Cindy Crawford blazed a trail from the runway and covers of leading fashion magazines around the world, to unconventional pop culture outlets such as then-new and cutting-edge MTV, Super Bowl commercials, and even Playboy magazine—in which she appeared not once but twice—in photo features ten years apart.

On the eve of her fiftieth birthday, Cindy Crawford looks back on her career and  life. In the completely accessible, down-to-earth voice of the Midwestern girl she is, Cindy discusses the love-filled, small-town childhood that shaped both her legendary work ethic, and the professionalism for which she is so well-regarded in an often cut-throat and competitive business, but she is also candid about the devastating early loss of her brother, Jeff, and her parents’ subsequent divorce only a few years later.

Cindy describes her earliest modelling years and the process of becoming less self-conscious in front of a camera; her reaction when an early agent suggested she remove the mole that would become her trademark; and how her exile from a Chicago studio gave her the courage to “dream big”, move to New York, and learn to own her power in a business that has been known to infantilize women.

She also gives us an account of her entrepreneurial accomplishments, and shares her observations on our youth-obsessed culture, her determination to create positive messages about a healthy body image that she knew would reach women of all ages; her feelings about marriage and motherhood; her thoughts on this milestone birthday, and what she would tell her younger self if she had the chance.

The 150 photographs in the book span Cindy’s entire career beginning in the mid-1980s, and feature images by every top name in fashion photography, including Annie Leibovitz, Victor Skrebneski, Arthur Elgort, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, Patrick Demarchelier, and Richard Avedon, among others. She describes the creative philosophy of each of these photographers, and the priceless and very different lessons she learned from each.

Booth Moore is a Los Angeles Times fashion critic. She has logged tens of thousands of miles covering the runways from L.A. to Paris and interviewing style leaders such as Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Tory Burch and Donatella Versace. The world has been her runway since she was a little girl in New York City — she was the one soaking in the street fashion, accessorizing her school uniform within an inch of expulsion and flaunting trademark pieces like red patent-leather Mary Janes. In 2014, she published her first book, The Glitter Plan: How We Started Juicy Couture With $200 and Turned It Into A Global Brand.

Paul Theroux is the author of many highly acclaimed books. His novels include The Lower River and The Mosquito Coast, and his renowned travel books include Ghost Train to the Eastern Star and Dark Star Safari.

Paul Theroux has spent fifty years crossing the globe, adventuring in the exotic, seeking the rich history and folklore of the far away. For the first time, in his tenth travel book, Theroux explores a piece of America — the Deep South. He finds there a paradoxical place, full of incomparable music, unparalleled cuisine, and yet also some of the nation’s worst schools, housing, and unemployment rates. It’s these parts of the South, so often ignored, that have caught Theroux’s keen traveler’s eye.

On road trips spanning four seasons, wending along rural highways, Theroux visits gun shows and small-town churches, laborers in Arkansas, and parts of Mississippi where they still call the farm up the road “the plantation.” He talks to mayors and social workers, writers and reverends, the working poor and farming families — the unsung heroes of the south, the people who, despite it all, never left, and also those who returned home to rebuild a place they could never live without.

Pico Iyer is the author of twelve books, on subjects as varied as Cuba, globalism, Graham Greene and the XIVth Dalai Lama, and writes up to 100 articles a year for magazines from The New York Review of Books to Harper’s, and Vanity Fair to Wired. He delivered popular TED talks in both 2013 and 2014—his most recent book is a small TED Original on the theme of stillness, and his talk on the nature of home attracted millions of viewers—and he has written a film script for Miramax, done many liner notes for Leonard Cohen and written introductions to more than 50 other books. Born in Oxford, England, and educated at Eton, Oxford and Harvard, he has been based, since 1987, in Western Japan, while traveling widely, everywhere from North Korea to Ethiopia and Yemen to Easter Island.

Emeril Lagasse is the chef-proprietor of 12 restaurants across the country. He has received numerous Best Restaurant, Best Chef, and Best Service awards, and in 2013 received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the James Beard Foundation for his work through the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, which supports children’s educational programs. The author of 18 cookbooks, his phenomenally successful Food Network show Emeril Live! launched a new era in culinary TV. In 2014, Lagasse participated in his third consecutive season as a main guest chef on Bravo’s hit food series, Top Chef, and joined TNT as co-host for their cooking series, On the Menu. Most recently, Emeril’s Florida entered its third season in January 2015 on the Cooking Channel.

In Essential Emeril, Lagasse goes back to basics, presenting more than 130 recipes that defined his award-winning career, each tested and perfected for today’s home cook. Dishes such as Crab and Corn Fritters with Fresh Corn Mayo, Roasted Portuguese Pork Loin With Potatoes and Homemade Pimenta Moida, and White Chocolate Bread Pudding With Toasted Macadamia Caramel Sauce reflect a lifetime of lessons in technique, showcasing the big flavor for which he is known and his continued evolution in the kitchen. Emeril offers valuable tips and step-by-step photo tutorials to ensure flawless results.

The book includes Emeril’s anecdotes revealing the inspiration behind each recipe, with appearances from A-list names – Mario Batali, Roy Choi, and Nobu Matsuhira, to name a few – alongside family members and early influences such as Julia Child and Charlie Trotter.

Classically trained chef Roy Choi is a culinary street revolutionary. He brings together the high and the low – deliciously, passionately, and socially. While his pedigree includes Le Bernardin and the Beverly Hilton, his fame rose with one amazing taco that tastes like L.A. – and nearly single-handedly created the gourmet food truck movement with his partners on the wings of Twitter.

Before hitting the streets with his popular food truck Kogi BBQ, Choi executed classical techniques in professional kitchens and banquet halls for twelve years in New York, San Francisco, Portland, and Lake Tahoe. Then came the Great Recession. Laid off, having lost everything, with a family to support, Choi had to get creative: He said yes to a friend who rented a truck and co-founded Kogi BBQ, which Newsweek later dubbed “the first viral eatery.”

Choi provided yet another source of culinary revelation with his first sit-down restaurant, Chego in April 2010, now located in Chinatown, followed by A-Frame in 2010, and Sunny Spot just east of Venice Beach in 2011. His newest restaurant venture, featuring the tastes of Korea translated through an L.A. state of mind, opened at a new hotel, The Line, in L.A. in late 2013. Choi’s first book, L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, was published in the Fall of 2013.

COVERT TO OVERT:
The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.
VIDEO WILL BE RELEASED ON FRIDAY.

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. His work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

To call Shepard Fairey a “street artist” is a little deceptive. Although he rose out of the skateboarding scene creating his “Andre the Giant Has A Posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, he has a mainstream recognition that most street artists never achieve. The title of his new book, Covert to Overt: The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey, acknowledges his evolution from unknown to established artist.

His upcoming book, Covert to Overt — focusing on his post-Obama HOPE poster output — showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years. This includes street murals, mixed-media installations, art-music events, countless silkscreens, and work from his extremely successful OBEY brand—all in his signature black, white, and red colors.

“Shepard Fairey’s art has an undeniable visual appeal with its selective palette and pleasing geometrics, yet the messages conveyed through his work are anything but neat and tidy.”
— Mark Sloan, Director and Chief Curator, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art

And indeed, Fairey has stayed true to his street art roots as the vast majority of his work focuses on a blend of politics, street culture, and fine art, giving it a strong cultural appeal that stretches beyond the art world.

Showcasing his cross-cultural collaborations with musicians, athletes, celebrities, and even cities, as well as covering all his work from paste-ups and prints, to his sculptures and murals, Covert to Overt shows Shepard Fairey as equal parts cultural chronicler and cult-hero artist. It also includes previously unpublished work as well as contributions from collaborators, the likes of Russell Brand, Chris Stein and Jello Biafra.
